| The Datacentrix Business Intelligence Methodology |
To deliver a predictable, timely source of information content requires a conscious approach, a blending of traditional and non-traditional techniques and technology, in order to deliver on the promise of Business Intelligence (BI). The implementation of BI environments should always be business driven, not technology driven, and the business benefit has to be clear for all parties involved. Too often, the technology discussion takes over from the business discussion, leading to a lack of clarity around the goals of the BI environment.
Implementing a BI solution as a “big-bang” effort has long been deemed a formula for disaster. Instead, BI environments are grown iteratively, addressing business requirements one at a time. Iterations, consequently, must remain focused and well defined to address specific business requirements. On the other hand, iterations must be assimilated into the long-term vision of the completed BI. Iterations are driven by specific requirements but guided by the broader, enterprise-wide BI roadmap.
Three forms (strategic, tactical, and operational) are most commonly used in today’s business environments. BI is being used by more and more of the business community members who have a very operational focus. In many businesses today, the BI environment is treated as a critical system, on par with the main ERP or other operational systems. As both products leverage our clients’ investment in the Microsoft SQL Server platform, the Datacentrix BI project delivery is measured in weeks and not months. The figure above depicts a logical split between the BI layers, namely back end (ProfitBase) and front end (Panorama Novaview). Varied sources of data for the BI solution is a non-issue, as the back end tool can connect to Oracle, DB2, and OLEDB database, and even spread sheets or flat files. |

ProfitBase is a business intelligence productivity tool. ProfitBase is an easy to use, configurable data warehouse requiring no programming of ETL, DTS or SSIS packages. It speeds up and yet simplifies any BI project. ProfitBase has ready to use templates so developers can quickly connect and extract data from a wide range of ERP systems, to build and update Microsoft OLAP cubes as frequently as needed. If a connector or cube template isn’t available, then ProfitBase Management Studio is used to build a new connector or cube, sometimes in a few hours. |
